LISBON, Portugal — Manchester United has shown an interest in acquiring Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon, as confirmed by the Portuguese club on Tuesday.
In a statement directed to the Lisbon Stock Exchange, Sporting disclosed that they have informed United of a release clause in Amorim’s contract, set at 10 million euros (approximately $10.8 million).
Sporting acknowledged that United “has shown interest” in meeting this financial demand for the coach.
The Premier League club is seeking a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday while the team currently sits in 14th position in the league standings.
Amorim, who is 39 years old, has been at the helm of Sporting since 2020, steering the team to victory in the Portuguese league during both the 2021 season and the most recent season.
A former midfielder for Portugal, Amorim primarily played his club football at Benfica.
His contract with Sporting persists until 2026, which adds an additional layer to the negotiations should they progress.
