ATLANTA — Ricky Brumfield, the associate head coach for special teams at Georgia Tech, is no longer part of the coaching staff after not being present during the Yellow Jackets’ 21-6 defeat at Virginia Tech on Saturday.
The university made an announcement on Tuesday stating that Tim Salem, who previously served as a senior advisor to head coach Brent Key, will take over as the special teams coach. The reasons for Brumfield’s departure remain undisclosed by Georgia Tech.
Coach Key has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the special teams, particularly following two consecutive losses. After the recent game, when asked about Brumfield’s absence, Key did not provide any comments.
The shortcomings of the Yellow Jackets’ special teams were evident in their recent 31-13 loss against Notre Dame on October 19. During that match, Notre Dame successfully blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt by Aidan Birr, and another attempt failed because of a dropped snap. Additionally, a fake punt from Notre Dame resulted in a 27-yard gain, further highlighting the special teams’ issues.
After the Notre Dame game, Key remarked that the special teams have not met expectations for three weeks. In response to a question last week implying that special teams problems were present but not severe, Key firmly stated, “There’s no kind of,” adding that their performance has been “nothing special.”
He labeled the recent special teams play as “unacceptable” and affirmed his intention to implement “the adjustments necessary,” indicating that decisions must be made in order to rectify the situation.
Currently, Georgia Tech has a record of 5-4, with 3-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team will take a break this week before facing No. 5 Miami on November 9.
