Investigators are looking into a possible propane leak as the cause of an explosion that completely destroyed a house and claimed the lives of two individuals early Monday in a town located just north of Dallas.

Emergency services responded to a distress call at 1:19 a.m. after residents reported hearing a significant “boom” in Van Alstyne, Texas. Following the explosion, a fire erupted at the site, which took several hours for firefighters to bring under control.

According to Grayson County Fire Marshal John Weda, the two individuals were inside the home at the time of the incident. Sadly, their remains were later recovered from the wreckage and have been sent to the Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office for forensic examination.

The residence was equipped with propane appliances, leading investigators to believe that a propane leak could have triggered the accident. Weda stated, “This appears to be a possible propane leak occurring inside the structure resulting in the explosion.” He also mentioned that his office, along with the Texas Railroad Commission, is actively investigating the incident.

Van Alstyne is situated approximately 55 miles (89 kilometers) to the north of the Dallas metropolitan area.
