Los Angeles has granted cornerback Tre’Davious White the opportunity to explore trade options, as confirmed by coach Sean McVay. McVay expressed on Monday that while the Rams would prefer to retain the two-time Pro Bowl selection, they understand his desire to find a potentially better situation. White had initially joined the Rams on a one-year contract worth $4.25 million after a successful seven-year stint with the Buffalo Bills.
McVay shared his thoughts on the situation, stating, “We’ll give him an opportunity to see if there’s a better situation that he deems appropriate for himself. But we love him here, and if he ends up staying here, I’ll certainly be happy about that.” White was a starter in the Rams’ first four games this season but has not played in the last three games due to the return of another free-agent signing, Darious Williams, from the injured reserve list. The coach noted that the team envisioned White’s role to be less extensive, especially considering the player’s injury history, which includes a knee ligament tear in late 2021 and an Achilles tendon tear earlier this year.
“It just hasn’t gone as what I think any of us would have liked up to this point,” McVay remarked, acknowledging the challenges faced by White. “In fairness to him, he was playing a lot more snaps than we anticipated because of all the injuries that we had at that corner spot in particular.” Currently, White finds himself lower on the depth chart compared to other defensive backs, including starter Cobie Durant, veteran Ahkello Witherspoon, and undrafted rookie Josh Wallace.
McVay praised White for his professionalism during this challenging period, stating, “He’s been such a pro about the way he’s handled it. Obviously not an ideal situation for him, the way that he’s practiced, the way that he’s been a pro in every sense of the word when he hasn’t been active for the past three weeks.” The Rams coach stressed the organization’s desire to keep White while also showing respect for his request to explore other opportunities.
As the Rams prepare to face Seattle on Sunday, they look to extend their winning streak to three games, marking their first such streak of the season.
