FRESNO, California — A police sergeant sustained injuries when he was shot during an ambush incident over the weekend in Fresno. The assailant was later killed by officers responding to the situation, according to local law enforcement officials.

The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the sergeant was seated in his parked car, focused on a nearby homicide investigation. Suddenly, a vehicle approached him, and the driver opened fire, catching the officer off guard, as reported by Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto. The Chief characterized the incident as a clear ambush against the law enforcement officer.

Though injured, the sergeant was able to retaliate and fire back before additional officers arrived on the scene to assist. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot by the responding officers and later died at a hospital, with their identity not disclosed at this time.

The injured sergeant, who has been with the department for 21 years, is currently in stable condition following surgery for multiple gunshot wounds to his lower body, according to local news reports. As the investigation continues, detectives are probing whether the shooter had any ties to the homicide case, involving a body discovered in a residence in the southeast area of Fresno.
