BEIJING, China — On Monday afternoon, a knife assault took place close to a school in Beijing’s Haidian district, resulting in injuries to five individuals, including three children, according to police reports.

Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries sustained were life-threatening. A 50-year-old man, referred to by the surname Tang, was apprehended on-site and is currently being investigated for the incident.

The attack is reported to have occurred near a well-known primary school, leading to significant concern among local residents and the broader community.

Footage making its rounds on social media depicted distressing scenes, including footage of two children lying on the ground and another image that showed a man with blood on his face being restrained by law enforcement personnel.

This year, there have been several knife attacks recorded across China, many of which have involved school-aged children. Notably, a tragic incident last month resulted in the death of a 10-year-old Japanese boy, following a similar assault near his school in Shenzhen. Additionally, a June attack at a bus stop designated for a Japanese school in Suzhou left a woman and her child injured, while a Chinese woman who attempted to assist was killed.

Earlier in October, a knife rampage at a supermarket in Shanghai resulted in three fatalities and left 15 others injured.

In China, strict regulations govern private gun ownership, making knives and improvised explosives some of the most frequently utilized weapons in violent incidents.
