INGLEWOOD, Calif. — In a notable shift during the game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Jake Haener was brought in to replace Spencer Rattler as the starting quarterback for the struggling New Orleans Saints late in the third quarter.
With the Saints trailing 16-5 and just 4:50 remaining in the quarter, Haener stepped onto the field. Despite facing a challenging situation, he managed to complete a single pass but was instrumental in a drive that featured a tough 24-yard run by Alvin Kamara, culminating in a 43-yard field goal from Blake Grupe.
Rattler, who was filling in for the injured Derek Carr, had been making his third consecutive start, but his performance was subpar as he went 12 for 24 with a total of 155 yards against the Chargers. The team struggled significantly, with eight of their first nine offensive series resulting in punts at SoFi Stadium.
It’s worth noting that Haener had also taken over for Rattler in the fourth quarter of the previous week’s game, where the Saints endured a disappointing 33-10 loss at home to the Denver Broncos.
