YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — In a thrilling college football matchup on Saturday, quarterback Beau Brungard led Youngstown State to a stunning upset over the seventh-ranked North Dakota, securing a 41-40 victory in overtime.
Brungard showcased his skills as he accumulated 248 total yards and accounted for four touchdowns during the game. In the overtime period, he dashed 15 yards to score, pushing Youngstown State ahead 41-34. North Dakota responded quickly, with quarterback Simon Romfo throwing a one-yard touchdown pass to Bo Belquist after a five-play drive. However, in a bid to clinch the win, Romfo’s two-point conversion attempt failed, sealing the game for Youngstown State.
The final moments of regulation were intense, with Youngstown State tying the game at 34 thanks to a successful 35-yard field goal by Andrew Lastovka with just 12 seconds remaining. Previously, North Dakota had taken a narrow lead when Gaven Ziebarth scored on a two-yard run, putting the Fighting Hawks ahead 34-31 with just over nine minutes left in the game.
Youngstown State initially took the lead early in the game, going up 7-0 when Brungard threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cyrus Traugh near the end of the first quarter. Throughout the game, Brungard displayed impressive versatility, rushing for three touchdowns and amassing 176 yards on 18 carries, in addition to his 72 passing yards and one touchdown.
On the opposing side, North Dakota’s Romfo had a notable performance as well, throwing for 212 yards and three touchdowns, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure the win for his team.
The victory improved Youngstown State’s record to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, adding a significant highlight to their season.
