South Carolina State Dominates Delaware State in High-Scoring Encounter
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — In an electrifying performance on Saturday, South Carolina State showcased their offensive strength by defeating Delaware State 69-35 during their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener. This marked the Bulldogs’ highest scoring game since 2011, with an impressive seven touchdowns in the first half alone.
The standout quarterback, Eric Phoenix, threw a spectacular 43-yard touchdown pass to Nigel Johnson in the waning moments of an explosive first half. Phoenix spearheaded the South Carolina State offense (5-2, 1-0), contributing significantly to the team’s record-setting first-half performance. Just 49 seconds after Delaware State (1-7, 0-1) missed a field goal, Phoenix connected with Johnson, enhancing the Bulldogs’ momentum.
Delaware State capitalized on a fumble recovery and a mishandled punt from the Bulldogs to put points on the board within the first half. These short-lived defensive mishaps helped the Hornets stay in contention early in the game.
Phoenix’s onslaught continued into the second half as he tossed another long touchdown pass, maintaining the Bulldogs’ dominating presence. Demetri Simmons capped off the scoring frenzy with a short rushing touchdown, sealing the game with less than six minutes left on the clock.
This impressive display of offense marks the first time the Bulldogs have reached such heights since their overwhelming 69-0 win over Delaware State in the past. The victory showcased not only the team’s offensive capability but also their resilience as they extend their winning streak to four games.
