WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — In a compelling showcase of skill, Sean Brown threw two touchdown passes to Carter Runyon, leading Towson to a 26-14 victory over Monmouth on Saturday. The win continued Towson’s strong hold over Monmouth, further solidifying their dominance in this matchup.
The Tigers (4-4, 2-2 in the Colonial Athletic Conference) took control early and maintained their lead throughout the game. Brown orchestrated a key drive to kick off the third quarter, moving the team down the field in an impressive nine-play, 70-yard series that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Runyon, extending Towson’s lead to 17-7.
As the game progressed, Monmouth’s Derek Robertson connected with Gavin Nelson for a 33-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 17-14 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. However, Towson responded with a 22-yard field goal from Keegan Vaughan, which pushed their lead back to six points. Midway through the fourth quarter, Brown found Runyon again, this time for a 6-yard touchdown, which ultimately sealed Towson’s victory.
Vaughan’s 23-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter broke an early tie, setting the stage for Towson’s offensive effort. On the other side, Monmouth’s Robertson recorded 305 passing yards along with one touchdown and an interception, while Nelson notably delivered a strong performance, racking up 133 receiving yards on nine catches.
With this win, Towson improved its overall record against Monmouth to 9-2 and remained unbeaten at 6-0 when playing on the Hawks’ home field.
