D.C. United has opted not to renew the contract of goalkeeper Alex Bono for the upcoming season following the team’s failure to secure a playoff spot in Major League Soccer. The decision was made public on Friday as the club revealed its roster plans, leaving 17 players signed for the 2025 season.
Among those retained is Christian Benteke, who distinguished himself as the Golden Boot winner by netting 23 goals throughout the regular season. Bono, on the other hand, was the primary goalkeeper for the majority of the season, during which D.C. United’s defense struggled, conceding a total of 70 goals—ranking as the third-highest in the league.
Additionally, D.C. United parted ways with Tyler Miller, who had a limited presence with just five matches played this year.
Finishing the season with a record of 10 wins, 14 losses, and 10 draws, D.C. United landed in 10th place within the Eastern Conference. Their hopes of making the playoffs were extinguished after a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Charlotte in their final game of the season last weekend.
Other players whose contract options were not exercised include Cristian Dájome, Nathan Crockford, Jeremy Garay, Christopher McVey, Martin Rodriguez, Hayden Sargis, and Luis Zamudio. Moreover, Russell Canouse and Pedro Santos concluded their contracts at the end of the season.
