MAINZ, Germany — In a Bundesliga match on Friday, Tim Kleindienst found the net, enabling Borussia Moenchengladbach to recover from an own goal to equalize 1-1 against Mainz.
The hosts took the lead shortly after halftime when Stefan Lainer inadvertently directed the ball into his own net, giving Mainz a glimmer of hope for their first home victory in five games.
However, just two minutes later, Kleindienst capitalized on a lapse in Mainz’s defense, executing a well-timed header to equalize.
This goal marked his sixth of the season, positioning him behind only Harry Kane and Omar Marmoush of Eintracht Frankfurt on the Bundesliga’s scoring leaderboard.
The outcome was yet another setback for Mainz, particularly after losing their top scorer, Jonathan Burkardt, to injury just 20 minutes into the match.
With this draw, Mainz secured only their second point at home out of a possible 15, showcasing the need for improvement. Their goalkeeper, Robin Zentner, played a crucial role in the match, making several vital saves that kept the home side in contention.
Following this result, Moenchengladbach climbed to ninth place in the league, while Mainz found themselves three positions lower in the standings.
