SEATTLE — The Seattle Sounders have officially extended the contract of their head coach, Brian Schmetzer, for multiple years, as announced on Thursday. However, the specifics of the contract terms were not disclosed.

A native of Seattle, Schmetzer has an impressive record of 126 wins, 80 losses, and 68 draws since stepping in as head coach of the Major League Soccer team during the summer of 2016. Under his leadership, the Sounders have claimed two MLS Cup titles and made two additional appearances in the championship finals. Moreover, the team achieved victory in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Throughout his coaching tenure, Schmetzer has also accrued 17 playoff wins through eight postseason appearances. This season, the Sounders finished with a record of 16 wins, 9 losses, and 9 ties, which positioned them as the fourth seed in the Western Conference. Seattle is set to face off against the Houston Dynamo in the first round of the playoffs, which will follow a best-of-three format and begin on Monday.

Prior to becoming the head coach, Schmetzer served as the lead assistant coach under Sigi Schmid from 2009 until 2016. Expressing his enthusiasm in a statement, Schmetzer said, “Seattle is my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be working. We’ve built something special here together, and I’m excited to keep pushing for more success alongside our passionate fans, exceptional staff, and outstanding players. The work will not stop — we have many goals to achieve and more history to write.”
