CANTON, N.Y. — A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday as a fire consumed a rescue organization’s kennel in northern New York, resulting in the loss of over 40 dogs, according to local authorities.

The blaze erupted at the No Dogs Left Behind facility located at Maple Ridge Kennels around 1 a.m., after a passerby noticed the flames engulfing the structure and promptly alerted emergency services, as reported by fire officials. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already spread extensively, claiming the lives of numerous animals before any could be rescued, stated the Canton Fire Department in a post on social media.

Members of No Dogs Left Behind expressed profound sorrow over the incident. In a heartfelt message on social media, the group lamented, “Each dog was a member of our family. Tragically, they are victims once again. We have no words to express our grief.”

The exact cause of the blaze remains uncertain, and an investigation has been initiated by officials from St. Lawrence County. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among firefighters or any other individuals at the scene.

The kennel structure resembled a house and was equipped with indoor kennels as well as an outdoor play area. Videos available on the organization’s website depict dogs joyfully running through grassy fields and pathways on the expansive property, showcasing the vibrant life that once filled the place.
