UConn’s Paige Bueckers enters her last season, determined to secure the coveted national championship

STORRS, Conn. – This summer saw frequent sightings of UConn basketball sensation Paige Bueckers at numerous high-profile sporting events, including the U.S. Open, various WNBA games, and even throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Minnesota Twins game, celebrating her roots. As the season opener approaches, the spotlight is firmly on Bueckers and her UConn teammates, as this will be her final collegiate season, and she aims tirelessly for a national championship—an achievement that has eluded her thus far. The combination of her rigorous training and rehabilitation efforts showcases her unyielding determination to succeed.

“I have loved my entire time at UConn,” Bueckers reflected at the recent Big East media day held at Madison Square Garden. “I can’t imagine it coming to an end, so I try not to worry about the past, or the future; I try to stay focused on the present.”

Bueckers made history as the first freshman to be named AP National Player of the Year in 2021; however, unfortunate injuries sidelined her for an entire season and hindered her in another. After returning last year, she made a significant impact, averaging 21.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, driving the Huskies to the Final Four. Despite having the opportunity to declare for the WNBA draft, Bueckers confirmed in February that she would continue her college career, bringing her rich experiences in overcoming hardships and leading in crucial moments. She recently turned 23.

“She’s feeling the pressure,” coach Geno Auriemma commented on Bueckers. “In practice, she’s demonstrating elements that we haven’t regularly seen during her time here. Previously, she might have deferred to others, but now she’s taking charge defensively and offensively. She’s determined to explore every opportunity.”

With fellow seniors Azzi Fudd, Caroline Ducharme, and Aubrey Griffin overcoming injury setbacks, Bueckers often practices alongside younger teammates more recently integrated into the UConn program. Auriemma is keen to encourage those younger players to rise to the occasion and rely less on her leading skills. During one practice session, the team scored six consecutive baskets, none attributed to Bueckers—a trend both she and Auriemma hope to see continue into the upcoming season.

“A lot is at stake for her this year, and you can definitely feel her passion and drive during practices,” sophomore guard Ashlynn Shade said. “She keeps the team accountable, ensuring we all are focused and striving to reach our shared goals.”

UConn finds itself ranked No. 2 in the preseason AP Top 25, enjoying widespread consensus as favorites to claim the Big East title. Engaging with coaches and players across the league, the respect for Bueckers is clear, as she remains a prominent figure during a time of growing enthusiasm for women’s basketball.

Creighton senior guard Morgan Maly noted that Bueckers plays the game at her own unique pace, making her a difficult opponent. Villanova head coach Denise Dillon further emphasized her prowess. “For years, I have maintained that Paige Bueckers is the best player in the sport,” Dillon stated. “Her skills and capabilities on both ends of the court are extraordinary. Even from her freshman year, I believed she was the standout player, and my opinion remains unchanged.”

The impending season kicks off on November 7 against Boston University, where UConn will face off against four top-10 teams while showcasing a talented and deep roster, positioning the Huskies as strong contenders for their 12th national title. Although UConn hasn’t secured a championship since 2016, they finished as national runners-up in 2022, a testament to their competitiveness in recent history.

“I feel like I am living my childhood dream, so I strive to never take a moment for granted,” Bueckers remarked. “I don’t assume anything is guaranteed, and I embrace each day, finding joy in this first healthy offseason.”

With Bueckers fit and motivated, the possibility of her achieving her ultimate goal draws nearer. “If people are claiming she is the greatest guard to have ever played, she’ll prove that,” Auriemma shared. “Alternatively, those who doubt her will also witness her growth. Expect extraordinary performances, unforgettable moments, and some challenges ahead, but she will be a player worth watching.”

Bueckers’ unwavering ambition is clear—she is determined to carve her name into history by contributing to a national championship victory. “Considering all the challenges I’ve faced, it would mean everything to finish my career on a high note,” she concluded.
