MADRID — The Spanish football league is seeking permission to host a highly anticipated match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Miami, scheduled for December.
The league announced that its U.S. partner, Relevent Sports, is currently collaborating with FIFA to ensure the match can proceed outside of Spain without any legal hurdles.
This initiative follows a previous attempt to hold a regular season game in the United States roughly five years ago, which ultimately fell through due to objections from Spain’s football federation and the players’ union.
The motivation behind organizing this match abroad stems from the league’s ambition to enhance the visibility of soccer and its own brand internationally.
Over recent years, the league has actively sought to extend its reach globally, aiming to compete more effectively with the formidable English Premier League.
However, there are concerns among critics who argue that playing matches overseas would lead to an uneven playing field within the league itself.
