COPENHAGEN, Denmark — On Thursday, Denmark appointed Brian Riemer as their new head coach, officially concluding the search for a permanent successor to Kasper Hjulmand following his exit after the European Championship.
Riemer, who is 46 years old and had recently been leading Belgian team Anderlecht, has signed a contract that extends through the 2026 World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Hjulmand resigned following Euro 2024, where Denmark ended up with draws in all three of their group matches before being eliminated by Germany in the round of 16.
After Hjulmand’s departure, Morten Wieghorst, a former international player for Denmark, initially took on the role of interim coach. However, he later went on sick leave due to minor stress issues. Augsburg’s assistant coach, Lars Knudsen, subsequently filled in temporarily.
The Danish Football Union confirmed that both Knudsen and Wieghorst, along with Daniel Agger—who has played for both Denmark and Liverpool—will remain as assistant coaches under Riemer.
Riemer, who hails from the suburbs of Copenhagen, has previously coached at FC Copenhagen and English Premier League side Brentford. Denmark’s director of football, Peter Møller, praised Riemer’s extensive experience in managing high-caliber players and his proficiency in handling the immense pressure that often accompanies top-level football.
Riemer is set to begin his tenure with a match against Spain at home in the Nations League on November 15. Following that, Denmark will head to Serbia for another game on November 18.
