BASEL, Switzerland — In a historic match at the Swiss Indoors tournament, Stan Wawrinka made headlines by becoming the oldest player to secure a victory in the event’s history, defeating Adrian Mannarino with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 on Wednesday.
At 39 years old and competing in his hometown, Wawrinka celebrated his first win over Mannarino after previously being bested by the French player on three occasions.
He will now prepare to take on 22-year-old Ben Shelton in hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals.
In other matches on Wednesday, top seed Andrey Rublev continued to impress by defeating Alejandro Tabilo with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-1, marking his 13th quarterfinal appearance this season.
In a surprising upset, Roberto Bautista Agut triumphed over second-seeded Casper Ruud, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced, overcoming Sebastian Baez with a decisive 7-5, 6-1 win.
Additionally, both David Goffin and Pedro Martinez progressed further in the tournament, showcasing a competitive atmosphere among the players.
