MADRID — Jonathan David made headlines on Wednesday by netting two goals to lead Lille to a 3-1 triumph over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. This performance followed his previous match against Real Madrid, where he also scored the decisive goal.
With his latest achievements on the field, David has now established himself as the all-time leading Canadian scorer in Champions League history, having tallied six goals—one more than the previous record holder, Tomasz Radzinski, as noted by UEFA.
Substituted in for Mohamed Bayo shortly after the hour mark, David’s vital contributions began with a penalty kick he converted in the 74th minute. This penalty, which sparked some debate due to a handball in the area, had to be validated through a video review that took considerable time to confirm. David’s second goal arrived late in the game, in the 89th minute, when he scored from within the penalty area to solidify Lille’s lead and secure the victory.
David’s prowess isn’t new; he previously scored from the penalty spot in a match against Real Madrid on October 2. Lille’s victory was significant as it snapped Atletico’s impressive 11-game unbeaten run at their home ground, the Metropolitano stadium, and dealt a blow to their dominance after a 14-match unbeaten streak in European competitions and a remarkable 36-match undefeated run across all tournaments.
Following this match, Lille rose to 15th place in the Champions League standings, while Atletico Madrid found themselves struggling, having earned only three points in their first three group stage matches.
