LEIPZIG, Germany — During a Champions League encounter with Liverpool on Wednesday, Leipzig’s midfielder Xavi Simons sustained a left leg injury that forced him to leave the pitch.
The Dutch international appeared to be in pain as he was assisted off by two members of the Leipzig support staff at the 77th minute.
Simons had already been limping due to a previous impact with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister while attempting to take a shot, and it worsened when he jumped for a header, landing awkwardly.
He remained on the ground for medical attention before ultimately being substituted.
Having been a standout performer for the Netherlands during the European Championship held in Germany, Simons has also played a crucial role in Leipzig’s strong performance in the Bundesliga, helping the team secure second place after their first seven matches.
