Diego Forlán, the former striker for the Uruguayan national team, is set to make his professional tennis debut next month by competing in doubles at the ATP Challenger tournament.
The 45-year-old athlete will partner with Argentine player Federico Coria during the Uruguay Open, which is slated to begin on November 11.
Forlán, who concluded his soccer career in 2019, is well-known for his time playing with prestigious clubs such as Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Internazionale, and Peñarol.
Notably, he played a significant role in leading Uruguay to the semifinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and securing a Copa America championship in 2011.
Since last year, Forlán has been participating in ITF Masters events, marking his transition into the world of tennis.
He mentioned that his father, Pablo Forlán—a former football player himself—also took up tennis after hanging up his boots.
“My father started playing at 41, and that motivated me to begin playing tennis at the age of 2,” Forlán elaborated, highlighting the family’s long-standing connection to the sport.
