ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell, has stated that the team is ready to move forward without wide receiver Jameson Williams.
“I’m not really supposed to speak on it,” Campbell commented during a press conference on Wednesday.
Williams is reportedly facing a two-game suspension due to a violation of the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, as reported earlier this week.
“I have no choice but to take it on the chin,” Williams expressed.
This Sunday, the Lions (5-1) are set to face off against the Tennessee Titans (1-5) at home, followed by a matchup against their division rival Green Bay Packers on November 3.
Despite the suspension, Williams has enjoyed a successful season thus far, having previously served a four-game suspension related to the league’s gambling policy last year.
To date, he has recorded 17 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns. In comparison, during his 12 games last season, he made 24 catches for 354 yards and two touchdowns. Two seasons ago, after recovering from knee surgery, he participated in six games and secured a 41-yard touchdown.
At just 23 years old, Williams has already made history by becoming the first player in the franchise’s history to achieve each of his first six receiving touchdowns from beyond 30 yards.
The Lions traded up in the 2022 NFL Draft to select the Alabama standout with the twelfth overall pick, demonstrating their commitment to his development. Recognizing that he would likely miss significant time in his rookie season due to injury, the organization has consistently supported him, both during last year’s suspension and amid this latest reported violation.
Coach Campbell has faith in Williams’ ability to bounce back from challenges, highlighting that he expects him to exhibit his resilience once more this season.
“I believe he’s going to return even stronger than before,” Campbell stated.
The Lions’ strategy for Williams appears to be yielding benefits this year, providing quarterback Jared Goff with a dynamic receiving option to complement the All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown, rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, and one of the top-rated running back duos in the league with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
Campbell chose not to disclose when the team was made aware of Williams’ alleged violation or the timeframe related to any potential appeal against the suspension.
