INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Clippers will pay tribute to basketball legend Jerry West this season by designating an empty seat at their new arena along with a court decal featuring his initials. West, who served as a consultant for the organization from 2017 until his passing in June at the age of 86, is being commemorated by the team in several meaningful ways.
The tribute will kick off during their season opener on Wednesday evening against the Phoenix Suns at the Intuit Dome, where fans can expect to see the special decal and memorial seat, in addition to a video honoring West’s legacy.
In a statement, Clippers chairman Steve Ballmer expressed the profound impact West had on the franchise. “Jerry was a lifelong learner and teacher who inspired all of us with his intellect, enthusiasm and love for the game,” he remarked. “He gave his whole heart to the NBA. We think about him and we miss him every day.”
The franchise had also kept an empty seat in their draft war room during the NBA draft in June as a nod to West’s influence on the team and the game.
This month, West made history by becoming the first individual to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times when he was honored as a contributor. This recognition reflects his significant contributions across various franchises, including the Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Los Angeles Lakers.
Additionally, the Lakers are taking part in honoring West this season by wearing a uniform band featuring his iconic No. 44. Having played his entire 14-year NBA career with the Lakers, West was selected as an All-Star every year of his tenure.
