A$AP Rocky is scheduled to stand trial in Los Angeles in early 2024 on allegations that he discharged a firearm at a former close friend in the vicinity of a Hollywood hotel back in 2021.
The proceedings for the 36-year-old rapper, known for his contributions to music, fashion, and his notable nomination for a Grammy, will commence with jury selection on January 21. Rocky has pleaded not guilty to two counts of felony assault involving a semiautomatic weapon. The trial, initially set to begin on November 12, was postponed after his legal team requested the delay to accommodate his participation as a headliner for the Rolling Loud music festival in Thailand next month.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark S. Arnold announced that the trial can be broadcasted with video coverage, and it’s expected to run for approximately two weeks. The judge emphasized the importance of public access to the courtroom proceedings. During a recent court session, he inquired with defense attorney Joe Tacopina about the potential attendance of Rihanna, who is in a relationship with Rocky and has two children with him, in order to manage security measures. Tacopina expressed uncertainty but mentioned that it is unlikely she would be present every day of the trial.
The decision for Rocky to face trial stemmed from a preliminary hearing held nearly a year ago. The court determined that he should indeed go on trial for reportedly aiming a gun at Terell Ephron, a childhood acquaintance, who claimed their friendship deteriorated leading up to a violent confrontation on November 6, 2021. Ephron testified that he sustained injuries when bullets grazed his knuckles during the incident.
If found guilty on all charges, Rocky faces the possibility of a 24-year prison sentence. Outside the courtroom, Tacopina expressed his belief in Rocky’s innocence, stating that despite the delay, Rocky is keen to move forward with the trial, as the unresolved legal matters are burdensome. Additionally, Rocky has recently been appointed as a co-chair for the upcoming Met Gala in May, alongside notable figures such as Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, and LeBron James, although the trial outcome may pose challenges to his attendance at the prestigious event.
