WARSAW, Poland — On Tuesday, Poland’s top diplomat announced the decision to close one of the country’s three Russian consulates as a countermeasure against what he described as sabotage activities attributed to Russia.
Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski urged the Russian government to cease its so-called hybrid warfare tactics aimed at Poland and its Western partners, cautioning that the nation is prepared to take “further decisive action” should these aggressions persist.
Sikorski informed the press in Warsaw that he has credible intelligence indicating that the Russian Federation is orchestrating sabotage attempts not only in Poland but also among allied nations.
He confirmed the withdrawal of approval for the Russian Consulate located in Poznan, stating that its staff would no longer be welcome within Polish borders. The Russian diplomatic presence remains active with consulates in both Gdansk and Krakow.
In response to this action, Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova indicated there would be “a painful response to yet another hostile act,” as reported by RIA Novosti.
Sikorski pointed to an incident from January involving the arrest of a Ukrainian individual who reportedly confessed to being instructed by Russian operatives to carry out an arson attack in Wroclaw. This plot was thwarted, and the suspect, identified only as Serhii S., is currently awaiting trial.
The minister asserted that approximately 20 individuals suspected of similar sabotage activities are under investigation in Poland, and he possesses information regarding additional arson plans affecting other allied nations.
The pro-European Union administration in Warsaw asserts that Russia is engaged in hybrid warfare tactics against Poland and other Western nations, viewing these as retaliatory measures for their support of Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict stemming from Russia’s invasion.
