LOS ANGELES — The prestigious AARP The Magazine has announced that Glenn Close will be honored with the Movies for Grownups Awards’ career achievement award.

At 77 years old, Close has captivated audiences for nearly five decades with iconic performances in films such as “Fatal Attraction,” “101 Dalmatians,” and “The Wife.” The award presentation will take place during AARP’s annual Movies for Grownups Awards ceremony in January, as revealed by the organization on Tuesday.

Expressing her appreciation in a statement, Close said, “I am so honored to receive the AARP Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award even though I feel like I’m still 35, if not younger. I love making movies for grownups and everyone else, and I deeply appreciate the inspiration and support of the people I have worked with over 50 years. Thank you, AARP, for this great honor.”

The Movies for Grownups initiative was established by AARP in 2002, aiming to celebrate and advocate for audiences aged 50 and above while also challenging age-related stereotypes in Hollywood. The awards ceremony, which champions films created “for grownups, by grownups,” is scheduled to occur in Beverly Hills, California, on January 11, with Alan Cumming as the host. It will later be broadcast as part of “Great Performances” on Sunday, February 23, at 7 p.m. Eastern time on PBS.

Martha Boudreau, AARP’s executive vice president and chief communications and marketing officer, highlighted Close’s significant contributions to cinema, noting her remarkable performances and active career as a septuagenarian.

“Glenn Close starred in ‘The Big Chill,’ the first blockbuster hit film about the Baby Boomer generation facing aging, and since then her career has shattered Hollywood’s outmoded, ageist stereotypes. Her steady successes exemplify what AARP’s Movies for Grownups program is all about,” said Boudreau.

Joining an esteemed list of past honorees including Jamie Lee Curtis, George Clooney, and Lily Tomlin, Close is set to receive recognition for her indelible impact on the film industry.
