Naomi Osaka will be sidelined for the remainder of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour due to an ongoing back injury.
The Hong Kong Open, scheduled to commence on October 28, revealed on its social media platforms on Monday that the four-time Grand Slam champion is not only withdrawing from this event but also concluding her season ahead of schedule.
The WTA confirmed this news on its official website as well.
Osaka had previously retired from her fourth-round match against Coco Gauff during the China Open three weeks ago and has been absent from competition since then. She has been dealing with both back and abdominal injuries.
Last week, in response to an inquiry from a fan on Instagram, Osaka disclosed that her condition was “worse than she thought” and mentioned that she was “doing her best” to possibly compete in her home tournament in Tokyo, a title she captured in 2019.
However, Osaka’s name did not appear in the draw for the Tokyo event over the weekend.
