CHICAGO — Nico Hoerner, the Chicago Cubs’ second baseman, underwent surgery on his right hand following the conclusion of the baseball season.
The 27-year-old athlete had a procedure to repair the right flexor tendon on October 11, with Dr. Keith Meister overseeing the surgery.
No additional information was provided by the team regarding the specifics of the operation on Monday.
This past season, Hoerner showcased an impressive performance, hitting .273 with seven home runs, 48 RBIs, and successfully stealing 31 bases over a career-high 151 games.
Notably, he excelled toward the end of the season, boasting a .346 batting average (45 hits in 130 at-bats) in his final 34 games.
The Cubs finished the season with an 83-79 record for the second year in a row and have now failed to qualify for the playoffs for four consecutive seasons.
Hoerner was drafted by the Cubs in the first round of the 2018 MLB amateur draft after completing his collegiate career at Stanford University.
In March 2023, he signed a lucrative three-year deal worth $35 million, which will keep him with the team through the 2026 season.
Since making his MLB debut in 2019, Hoerner has compiled a .278 batting average, hitting 29 home runs, driving in 217 runs, and making 102 steals across 548 games in the major leagues.
He also earned a Gold Glove award in 2023, highlighting his defensive skills on the field.
