The New Orleans Pelicans have finalized a significant contract extension for forward Trey Murphy III, locking him in for four additional years at $112 million, according to a reliable source close to the agreement.
This extension comes as Murphy prepares for the last season of his rookie deal. Had this extension not occurred, he would have been poised to enter the market as a restricted free agent come next offseason. The information was shared under the condition of anonymity as the team has not made an official announcement regarding the extension.
At just 24 years old, Murphy was selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft from the University of Virginia. He has demonstrated his growing capabilities on the court, averaging a personal best of 14.8 points per game last season, over the course of 57 appearances, with 23 of those as a starter.
Throughout his three seasons in the league, Murphy has consistently shown his shooting skills, hitting 39.2% from beyond the arc. Additionally, he has gained recognition for his athleticism and ability to make aggressive drives to the basket, which earned him a previous spot in the NBA All-Star Weekend’s dunk contest.
Unfortunately, Murphy recently suffered a right hamstring strain during the second practice of the Pelicans’ training camp held in Nashville earlier this month.
As a result of this injury, he is not anticipated to be available when the Pelicans kick off their regular season against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
