WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Two rapid-fire goals in the third period by Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton propelled the Winnipeg Jets to a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, allowing them to remain the only unbeaten team in the NHL.
This win marked a franchise-record start for the Jets, extending their undefeated streak to five games to kick off the season at 5-0-0.
In addition to Lowry and Appleton’s contributions, the Jets saw scoring from Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Vladislav Namestnikov, and Nino Niederreiter, who sealed the win by scoring into an empty net. Appleton also recorded an assist, while teammates Nikolaj Ehlers, Colin Miller, and Josh Morrissey each tallied two assists in the match.
The game started off in favor of Pittsburgh (3-4-0), who took a 2-0 lead in the second period with goals from Lars Eller and Kevin Hayes. Though Eller scored again early in the third period to level the score at 3-3, the Jets went on to score three consecutive goals, solidifying their win.
Both teams opted for backup goaltenders in this matchup, giving them their first starts of the season. Eric Comrie made a total of 38 saves for the Jets, while Alex Nedeljkovic turned away 31 shots for the Penguins.
A notable takeaway is that the Jets have seen a variety of players contributing to their scoring, with twelve different players finding the back of the net this season. Conversely, the Penguins have been experiencing challenges in goal, starting their third different goalie in as many games. Tristan Jarry was a healthy scratch for this game after being pulled during last Wednesday’s matchup against Buffalo. Rookie Joel Blomqvist had started against Carolina, and Nedeljkovic was brought up from a conditioning assignment in the AHL for the match against Winnipeg.
A pivotal moment occurred when Eller tied the game 3-3 just 1:39 into the third period. Following the equalizer, Jets’ captain Lowry secured the faceoff and immediately took advantage of a bouncing puck off Appleton to regain the lead at 4-3 at the 4:20 mark. Appleton then scored again at 7:41 to solidify their lead.
One key statistic to note is that Kyle Connor has now scored in three consecutive games and is enjoying a five-game point streak, which includes four goals and one assist.
Looking ahead, the Jets will embark on a three-game road trip, starting with a clash against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Penguins will be facing the Calgary Flames as they continue a four-game road stretch on the same day.
