CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns faced a concerning moment during their game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday when quarterback Deshaun Watson was carted off the field due to what appeared to be a serious injury to his right leg.
Watson, who has struggled to meet expectations in his time with the Browns, went down during a second down play with just 1:26 remaining in the first half, and interestingly, he was not touched by any defenders at the time.
While attempting to drop back for a pass at the Bengals’ 21-yard line, Watson’s right leg buckled unexpectedly. As he lay on the field, it was evident he was in distress, as he raised his hands to his head. The Cleveland training staff was quick to attend to him, with teammates and Bengals players gathering around in support.
As he was taken away on a cart, Watson made a gesture that reflected his mood by pulling a towel over his head. Meanwhile, the Browns have not yet provided any details regarding the severity of his injury.
Cleveland made headlines when they signed Watson to a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million in 2022. However, his time with the team has been tumultuous, including an 11-game suspension during his first season and a subsequent shoulder injury that cut his second season short after just six starts, which required surgery.
This season has also seen Watson struggling with performance, prompting some fans and analysts to call for head coach Kevin Stefanski to make changes to the quarterback position. The crowd made their dissatisfaction known when Watson was booed during pregame introductions.
Prior to his injury, Watson had completed 15 out of 17 passes for 128 yards and had been sacked twice. Following his exit, second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over as Watson’s replacement, marking his first time stepping in as the backup this season, ahead of veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.
