MADRID — A reduced number of spectators witnessed Atletico Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Leganes on Sunday in a La Liga clash held at a partially restricted venue due to recent issues with fans.
Alexander Sorloth netted two goals while Antoine Griezmann added another, after Leganes took an early lead during the first half at the Metropolitano stadium, which had one fan section closed off. This closure was a consequence of Atletico fans throwing objects onto the pitch during a previous local derby against Real Madrid last month.
The affected section is typically occupied by the club’s more extreme fan group.
Although Atletico was initially sanctioned with a three-match closure of this section, they successfully appealed the decision, resulting in the restriction being lessened to just one match. The derby in question was halted for over 15 minutes after items were thrown towards Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and the game ultimately concluded in a 1-1 draw.
The win on Sunday halted Atletico’s streak of three matches without a victory across all competitions, propelling Diego Simeone’s squad to third place in the league, just four points behind the current leaders, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Mallorca secured a victory over Rayo Vallecano, finishing the match 1-0 thanks to a goal from Vedat Muriqi in the 75th minute. This triumph marked the fourth victory in five outings for Mallorca, allowing them to climb to sixth place in the league standings, while Rayo remained in ninth.
Additionally, Barcelona was set to face Sevilla later on Sunday, aiming to extend their lead to three points over second-placed Real Madrid, who achieved a 2-1 win against Celta Vigo the previous day.
