SAO PAULO — President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil has called off his planned trip to Russia to participate in the BRICS summit, following an injury he sustained at home that resulted in a cut on his neck, as reported by his office.
At 78 years old, the president was slated to attend the BRICS meeting, which includes nations from developing economies, taking place in Kazan from Tuesday to Thursday this week.
Medical updates from the Sirio Libanês Hospital in Sao Paulo revealed that doctors advised Lula against undertaking any long-distance travel for the time being, although he is permitted to continue with his normal activities. Physicians Roberto Kalil and Ana Heleno Germoglio indicated that they will be monitoring the president’s recovery closely.
In a separate announcement, Brazil’s presidency confirmed that Lula will still participate in the BRICS summit through videoconferencing. He will also carry on with his responsibilities in Brasilia throughout the week, but further details regarding the incident that led to the injury have not been disclosed.
