WOLVERHAMPTON, England — In a thrilling finish, Manchester City narrowly defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, thanks to an injury-time goal from John Stones.
Stones found the back of the net by heading in a corner during the fifth minute of added time in the second half. Despite a VAR review questioning whether Bernardo Silva was offsides and interfering with goalkeeper Jose Sa, referee Chris Kavanagh upheld the goal.
This decision proved to be contentious, denying Wolves a much-needed second point of the season and leaving their manager Gary O’Neil visibly frustrated on the sidelines. On the other hand, the victory allowed City to move two points clear of Liverpool, who were set to play Chelsea later that day.
Earlier in the match, Josko Gvardiol made an impressive impact by equalizing for City with a remarkable shot from outside the box in the 33rd minute. However, Wolves held their ground against a series of relentless attacks from City until Stones’ late heroics, reminiscent of his equalizing goal against Arsenal last month.
The match began with Jorgen Strand Larsen putting the home side ahead, but ultimately, it was Manchester City’s resilience and Stones’ last-minute contribution that secured the win.
