PARIS — Winger Bradley Barcola made a significant impact in Paris Saint-Germain’s match against Strasbourg on Saturday, contributing one goal and assisting another for the young player Senny Mayulu, leading PSG to a 4-2 victory and securing the top position in the French league.
The 18-year-old Mayulu was granted a rare starting opportunity as coach Luis Enrique decided to rotate his lineup in anticipation of an upcoming Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
Mayulu opened the scoring for the defending champions in the 18th minute, unleashing a fierce shot after combining with Barcola on the left side of the pitch.
With the Champions League match on the horizon, Enrique also opted to rest captain Marquinhos and the quick-footed winger Ousmane Dembélé, while forward Randal Kolo Muani was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained in training.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio doubled the lead for PSG by scoring from close range right after halftime in the 47th minute. Although striker Sékou Mara managed to reduce the deficit for Strasbourg, Barcola soon restored the two-goal cushion, netting his seventh goal of the season in the 65th minute.
South Korean forward Lee Kang-in then extended PSG’s lead further. However, in the closing moments of the match, a lapse in defense allowed 18-year-old Senegalese midfielder Pape Daouda Diong to score for Strasbourg, bringing the final score to 4-2.
With this victory, PSG and Monaco remain undefeated in the league, each amassing 20 points from their first eight matches.
In other league action, Portuguese forward Jota found the net in the 86th minute, equalizing for Rennes with a cross from Arnaud Kalimuendo, securing a 1-1 draw against Brest in the Brittany derby.
Brest had taken the lead early in the second half with a penalty converted by Romain Del Castillo after a handball incident.
Lens managed to break their streak of five consecutive draws, clinching a 2-0 victory over Saint-Etienne, which propelled them into fifth place.
Polish winger Przemys?aw Frankowski scored with an impressive long-range strike in the first half, and striker Rémy Labeau Lascary added his first senior goal later in the match.
Meanwhile, Monaco played to a goalless draw against Lille on Friday, leaving the race at the top of the table competitive.
