HANOVER, N.H. — In a tightly contested matchup, Grayson Saunier found the end zone twice during crucial short-yardage situations, including the decisive score in the fourth quarter, leading undefeated Dartmouth to a narrow 20-16 victory over Central Connecticut on Saturday.
Saunier’s pivotal touchdown came after an impressive nine-play drive, starting at the Blue Devils’ 32-yard line, a drive set up by Sean Williams’ 26-yard punt return and a facemask penalty against Central Connecticut. This score allowed the Big Green, now boasting a 5-0 record, to take a critical lead in the fourth quarter.
Following the kickoff, with just over five minutes remaining, Central Connecticut found themselves in a promising position with a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line. However, the Blue Devils struggled to capitalize, managing only three yards on the ground before being halted by three consecutive incomplete passes.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, Central Connecticut had taken a brief lead at 16-13 after Jadon Turner completed a 13-yard touchdown run, though their attempt for an extra point proved unsuccessful.
For Dartmouth, Saunier demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities, passing for 177 yards while adding 42 yards on the ground. Additionally, Owen Zalc contributed to the scoreline with two successful field goals. On the other side, Central Connecticut’s Brady Olson had a strong outing, throwing for 168 yards that included a touchdown connection with Isaac Boston.
As the season progresses, Dartmouth continues to solidify its standing, currently ranked No. 24 in the FCS coaches poll, showcasing their resilience in close games like this one.
