ATLANTA — Quarterback Zach Pyron is set for his first starting opportunity with Georgia Tech since his freshman season in 2022. He will take the lead against the No. 12 ranked Notre Dame this Saturday, filling in for Haynes King, who sustained an injury to his right arm or shoulder during last week’s thrilling victory over North Carolina, which ended at 41-34. King was observed in street clothes while his teammates warmed up, confirming his absence from the game as Pyron was officially named the starter.
This season, Pyron has participated in every game so far, backing up King on the field. He has contributed significantly in the rushing department, amassing 60 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Although he has only attempted seven passes this season, he showcased his abilities as a passer during his two previous starts in 2022, where he demonstrated solid performance.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Yellow Jackets are set to miss their leading tackler, linebacker Kyle Efford, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Freshman Tah’j Butler will step into the starting role to replace Efford in the lineup.
Notre Dame, however, will also be lacking key players in its lineup. Cornerback Benjamin Morrison, a vital member of the defense, suffered a season-ending hip injury during last week’s matchup against Stanford, where Notre Dame secured a major win with a score of 49-7. Additionally, the team’s kicker, Mitch Jeter, is listed as questionable due to a hip injury, which could impact their special teams’ effectiveness.
