Neymar set to play for Al-Hilal next week following year-long recovery from ACL injury

SAO PAULO — Neymar is set to return to the field for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in an upcoming AFC Champions League Elite fixture after a year-long absence due to injury.

His marketing agency, NR Sports, issued a statement on Saturday indicating that Neymar’s passion for the game and his ambition to participate in the next World Cup have motivated his comeback.

“Although a final decision regarding his return has yet to be made, the number 10 will be available to play on Monday, continuing his impressive journey,” the announcement mentioned, referring to Al-Hilal’s match against Al-Ain from the UAE.

Neymar joined the Riyadh squad in August 2023 but has only appeared in five games before he underwent surgery to repair a ruptured meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee following international duty in October of the previous year.

“The past days have been filled with pain, anxiety, and a strong yearning for soccer, feelings that have been eased by the unwavering support of family and friends, all present for our number 10. He has also felt the encouragement from fans globally through various social media platforms,” the statement continued. “The wait is finally over.”

Additionally, a social media update released on Saturday featured the 32-year-old discussing his recovery journey and showcasing footage of his rehabilitation efforts.

“Each time I face an injury, I make sure to come back. But I never return without being fully ready,” a visibly emotional Neymar expressed in the video.

Although Neymar resumed training in July, a month later, his club coach Jorge Jesus tempered aspirations for an immediate return. The Portuguese coach did not outright confirm whether Neymar would play on Monday.

Neymar, whose current two-year contract is set to expire next August, is permitted to participate in AFC Champions League Elite games since the tournament does not impose limitations on the number of foreign players. However, he will return to the Saudi Pro League in January.

Should he maintain fitness, Neymar may also rejoin Brazil’s national team for two rounds of South American World Cup qualifying slated for November.
