SEATTLE — Nérilia Mondésir made history by becoming the first player born in Haiti to find the net in the National Women’s Soccer League, scoring the decisive goal in the Seattle Reign’s 2-1 triumph over the Houston Dash on Friday evening.

The Reign, with a record of 6 wins, 14 losses, and 5 draws, broke their five-game losing streak, which also included a scoreless run.

Olivia Athens opened the scoring for the Reign in the 22nd minute. Following a corner kick that was cleared out, she seized the opportunity at the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot into the near-post corner.

Just three minutes later, Barbara Olivieri equalized for the Dash by converting a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box.

Mondésir, making her first start since joining the Reign in August, capitalized on a loose ball in the box and managed to get a shot past goalkeeper Jane Campbell’s legs in the 65th minute, securing the win for her team.

The Dash continued to struggle in the standings, sitting at the bottom of the table with 5 wins, 15 losses, and 5 draws. Both teams had already been ruled out of the playoff race prior to the match.
