ATLANTA — Spelman College has announced that its President, Dr. Helene D. Gayle, is taking a personal leave of absence, effective immediately. This renowned historically Black college did not specify the reasons behind Gayle’s departure. In her absence, the day-to-day operations of the college will be overseen by Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, who previously served as chair of the board of trustees and is also a limited partner with the Atlanta Falcons.

In a statement, the administration assured that the university will continue to function smoothly, adhering to its core principles of care, commitment, integrity, reliability, and trust. Dr. Gayle took the helm of Spelman in 2022, following the retirement of former president Mary Schmidt Campbell. Spelman College is a significant member of the Atlanta University Center, which comprises four historically Black colleges.

Prior to her role at Spelman, Dr. Gayle was the leader of the Chicago Community Trust, one of the largest community foundations in the United States. She is recognized as an epidemiologist with extensive experience in combating AIDS and HIV and has led international initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty.

Roz Brewer has been engaged with Spelman College for 17 years, having spent 12 of those years as board chair. Throughout her tenure, she worked alongside three different presidents and led two of the most significant fundraising efforts in the college’s history. She is also known for her former roles as president and CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, chief operating officer for Starbucks, and CEO of Sam’s Club.

In a message directed to the board of trustees, Brewer expressed her commitment to guiding the institution during this transitional period. She emphasized the importance of maintaining stability, supporting leadership, and ensuring that the needs of the student body are met. “We’ll build on our strengths while embracing change as we chart the best path for Spelman’s future,” she stated. Brewer articulated her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute back to the college that has played a pivotal role in her own professional development.
