FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Wide receiver Mike Williams is prepared to contribute as part of the game plan against the Pittsburgh Steelers this upcoming week, even with the recent addition of star receiver Davante Adams, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Friday.
Earlier this season, Williams’ inconsistent performances seemed to play a role in the Jets’ decision to pursue a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for Adams. However, Ulbrich clarified that Williams and the rest of the receiving corps embraced Adams’ arrival wholeheartedly.
“The entire receiver group has been incredibly welcoming to Devante, which is fantastic,” noted Ulbrich.
In his eighth season, Williams was signed during the offseason to enhance the offensive options available to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, complementing other key targets like Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard. Despite his previous success with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded 309 catches and 71 touchdowns over seven years, Williams has managed only 10 receptions without finding the end zone for the Jets, who currently hold a 2-4 record.
In a recent game against Buffalo, a crucial moment came late when Williams slipped, leading to a decisive interception by Bills cornerback Taron Johnson. Rodgers later pointed out that Williams ran the incorrect route on that play, and the arrival of Adams seemed to heighten speculation about a potential trade involving Williams.
Williams expressed his determination to have a meaningful impact with his new team. “I came here for a reason,” he shared. “I’m excited for this weekend. I’ll finish my preparation tomorrow and look forward to playing on Sunday night.”
During their discussions, Williams and Rodgers reviewed the last pass thrown against Buffalo to ensure they are aligned moving forward. “We all analyze the film and go through it together,” Williams explained.
The addition of Adams is a significant boost for the Jets’ passing game, according to Williams, who believes it elevates the entire receiving unit to an elite level. “I’m eager to learn from Adams and gain insights from his extensive experience in the league,” he said. “He’s been among the best, consistently ranking in the top two or three receivers for quite some time.”
This season, Adams has recorded 18 receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown with the Raiders. Historically, he has achieved 100 or more catches in five of his last six seasons, including a career-best 123 in 2021 while playing alongside Rodgers in Green Bay.
