TAMPA, Florida — A former college student in Florida is now facing multiple charges relating to the death of her newborn baby, whose body was found discarded in a trash can, wrapped in a towel.
Authorities reported on Friday that Brianna Moore, 19, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect causing great bodily harm, among other charges. State Attorney Suzy Lopez indicated that Moore was taken into custody in her home state of Mississippi and will be brought back to Florida to face these allegations.
“It pains me to know that this baby girl might still be alive if this woman had sought help from the authorities. Instead, her actions resulted in the tragic loss of her newborn,” Lopez stated in a news announcement.
As of Friday, it remains unknown whether Moore has legal representation to advocate on her behalf.
According to prosecutors, on the night of April 27, Moore’s roommates reported hearing the sound of a crying baby while in their residence hall at the University of Tampa. They also discovered blood in their shared bathroom. When campus security was alerted, Moore claimed to them that the blood was a result of menstruation, as outlined by Lopez.
The situation escalated when the roommates reached out to law enforcement the following day after discovering a bloodstained towel in the trash, leading officers to find the infant’s body wrapped inside.
Florida’s Safe Haven law provides an option for parents to surrender unwanted infants anonymously within 30 days of birth, without any questions. Parents can drop off their newborns at a hospital or any fire station to ensure their safety.
