CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Tony Bennett, the head coach of the Virginia men’s basketball team, is stepping down from his role effective immediately.
The announcement of his retirement will take place at a press conference scheduled for Friday, though no specific reasons for his sudden decision have been disclosed. This news comes just weeks before the basketball season is set to commence.
At 55 years old, Bennett leaves behind a significant legacy with the Cavaliers, having guided the team to a national championship victory in 2019.
Over his 15-year tenure at the University of Virginia, he led the program to the NCAA Tournament on ten occasions, showcasing his strong coaching skills.
Just this past June, Bennett had signed a contract extension that would have kept him in his position until at least 2030.
During his time at Virginia, Bennett compiled an impressive record of 364 wins against 136 losses.
His achievements include securing two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament titles as well as six regular-season championships.
Additionally, his coaching prowess earned him recognition as the national coach of the year three times throughout his career.
