MOGADISHU, Somalia — A tragic incident unfolded in Somalia’s capital on Thursday when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a café near the General Kaahiye Police Academy, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and leaving six others injured, as reported by local law enforcement.

The victims included a mix of police officers and civilians who were enjoying tea in the café at the time of the attack. This brazen act of violence has been attributed to the militant group al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda. The group has frequently executed similar attacks across Somalia.

Witnesses described the experience as shocking. Mohammed Ali, a local resident, recounted hearing a deafening explosion: “The café was packed with people relaxed over tea, and then all of a sudden, there was chaos everywhere.”

Medical personnel at Madina Hospital mentioned that they were treating several people who suffered injuries from the blast. A paramedic stated, “We are focusing on caring for the victims, many of whom have taken on serious wounds.”

The attack on Thursday marks a grim continuation of violence in the region, occurring just two months after 37 lives were lost in an assault at a public beach in Mogadishu.

Somalia is currently in the process of assuming security duties from foreign troops as the African Transition Mission in Somalia prepares for its mandate conclusion in December 2024. The country continues to grapple with security challenges posed by militant groups, underscoring the ongoing struggle to maintain peace and stability.
