Meta has announced layoffs affecting employees stationed at WhatsApp and Instagram as part of a broader effort to realign its workforce with its strategic objectives.
A company representative acknowledged that alterations were being made within certain teams to better align with both long-term goals and location strategies. However, specifics regarding the number of employees laid off were not provided.
“In instances where a position is eliminated, we strive to find alternative roles for those affected,” Meta communicated in its statement.
Reports suggest that cuts extend to teams associated with WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, the division focused on Meta’s virtual reality initiatives.
Among those impacted by the layoffs is Jane Manchun Wong, a noted software engineer celebrated for uncovering unreleased features in various social media applications before her employment with Meta in 2023.
This current wave of layoffs follows several previous reductions as the company recalibrates its workforce after extensive hiring during the pandemic. Earlier this year, Meta reduced positions within Reality Labs, in addition to a significant reduction of 11,000 jobs in 2022. The year before that, another cut saw 10,000 positions eliminated, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized a focus on efficiency for 2023.
“I’m still trying to process this news, but I’ve been informed that my role at Meta has been affected,” Wong shared in a public post on Threads, reflecting on her experience.
