KATHMANDU, Nepal — A British adventurer who holds the title of the youngest female to ascend all 14 of the world’s tallest peaks has voiced her concerns regarding the risks posed by untrained climbers attempting to conquer high-altitude mountains. Adriana Brownlee, who reached the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 20 in 2021, recently completed her remarkable journey by climbing Mount Shishapangma in China earlier this month.
Brownlee emphasizes the growing number of inexperienced climbers she has encountered, which heightens the danger not only for themselves but also for others on the mountain. “I’ve observed many who should not be in these challenging environments due to their lack of essential training and skills necessary to navigate the unpredictable conditions of high-altitude climbs,” she stated in Kathmandu this Thursday. “We’ve had to assist them with basic tasks, such as how to properly put on crampons and harnesses.”
In her view, those aiming to conquer the highest peaks should possess a foundation of experience gained through ascending smaller mountains. This preparation would ensure that they have the requisite skills and can better adapt to the challenges posed by extreme altitudes.
Brownlee recently traveled to Nepal, joining fellow climbers from Tibet, including Nima Rinji Sherpa, who, at just 18 years old, has now become the youngest individual to scale all 14 major peaks. Current guidelines primarily focus on age restrictions, requiring climbers to be at least 16 years old in Nepal, but few regulations exist regarding experience prior to climbing the most formidable mountains.
Reflecting on her journey, Brownlee shared that her passion for mountaineering originated at the tender age of 8, inspired by her father, who nurtured her dreams of becoming an accomplished climber. She now aims to reach unclimbed summits in Nepal and continue exploring other mountain ranges globally.
Moreover, Brownlee and her partner have established a mountaineering business in Nepal dedicated to guiding customers who are well-equipped and proficient enough to navigate the demanding mountain environment. She expressed her hope of motivating younger generations to chase after their own aspirations, maintaining, “The key message is that in life, you can choose any path to achieve your goals. These goals may be unique to you, and it’s crucial to remain dedicated to them, regardless of societal opinions.”
