BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Following a tragic mass shooting that occurred last month outside a nightclub, a man has been charged in relation to the incident that resulted in four fatalities and left several others injured, according to local police authorities on Wednesday.

Damien McDaniel, a 22-year-old individual, has been arrested and faces charges of capital murder tied to the shooting that took place on September 21 in the Five Points South entertainment area. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond confirmed that McDaniel is additionally facing 17 counts of attempted murder concerning the individuals who sustained injuries during the incident. As of now, it is unclear whether McDaniel has legal representation to comment on his behalf.

In a statement, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin indicated that the arrest represents a significant advancement towards achieving justice.

During a news conference, when asked if there might be additional arrests linked to the shooting, Chief Thurmond mentioned that the investigation is still active. Previously, police reported that multiple shooters opened fire on a crowd waiting outside the venue. Investigators are continuing to evaluate the possibility that one or more shooters had a specific target among the victims; however, the chief refrained from speculating on the motive behind the attack.

In addition, McDaniel is implicated in connection with two other deadly shootings that occurred within a short span of three days in September. In one of those incidents, three other individuals have also been charged.

“This is merely one milestone in our efforts to move forward. We anticipate further developments in these investigations as we prepare for the court proceedings,” Chief Thurmond stated.
