SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has acknowledged that its recently updated constitution marks South Korea for the first time as “a hostile state.”

In a recent two-day parliamentary session, North Korea’s legislative body convened to amend its constitution, though immediate details following the meeting were scarce in state media reports.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong Un emphasized the need for this constitutional revision, aiming to identify South Korea as the primary adversary, eliminate the objective of peaceful reunification on the Korean Peninsula, and assert the North’s territorial claims.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced on Thursday that the updated constitution “clearly defines” South Korea as a “hostile state.” This development coincided with reports of North Korea demolishing unused transport links, such as roads and railways, that formerly connected the two Koreas.

Unfortunately, KCNA did not provide any additional specifics regarding the constitutional revisions.
