PLAINS, Ga. — On Wednesday, former President Jimmy Carter participated in the 2024 election by casting his ballot through mail-in voting, as confirmed by the Carter Center in an official statement. This event took place shortly after Carter celebrated his milestone 100th birthday on October 1, at his residence in Plains, Georgia, where he is currently receiving hospice care.
Carter’s son, Chip, expressed that his father has been very much involved in the current electoral process. “He’s engaged with the election,” Chip Carter mentioned earlier in a family meet-up. “When I talked to him two months ago about reaching 100 years old, he simply responded, ‘No, I’m trying to live to vote for Kamala Harris.’”
The statement released by the Carter Center was brief, indicating no further details regarding Carter’s voting experience would be provided.
In the lead-up to the election, voter turnout in Georgia has been notably high, particularly since early voting began on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, reports from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger indicated that nearly 460,000 residents had either voted in person or submitted absentee ballots.
Importantly, Carter’s vote will still be counted even if he passes away before Election Day, which falls on November 5. Robert Sinners, a representative from the secretary of state’s office, emphasized that according to Georgia’s electoral regulations, once an absentee ballot is received by local election officials, it is considered to have been cast at that moment.
