Mexico ends 7-match winless run against the US with a 2-0 victory in a friendly, thanks to goals from Jiménez and Huerta

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Raúl Jiménez made his mark by scoring from a free kick in the 22nd minute and assisting César Huerta’s goal shortly after halftime in the 49th minute, leading Mexico to a 2-0 victory over the United States. This win ended a frustrating seven-game winless run against their rival, as it was Mauricio Pochettino’s second match at the helm of the American squad.

Mexico had endured five losses and two draws against Team USA since September 2019, but the tide turned in this encounter. Due to the absence of key player Christian Pulisic along with several other regulars, the U.S. team struggled significantly, failing to register a single shot in the first half. This marked the first time since an exhibition match against Mexico in April 2023 that they ended the first half without any attempts at goal.

Jiménez showcased his skill with a beautifully curled shot from over 25 yards out, finding the back of the net for his 34th goal on the international stage. The forward showcased his ability to create opportunities as well, regaining control of the ball from Tim Ream after a deflection. He then set up Huerta, who skillfully navigated around defender Miles Robinson and struck past goalkeeper Matt Turner from a close distance for his third international goal.

With this win, Pochettino celebrated his second victory as coach of the team, following a successful debut against Panama that also ended in a 2-0 scoreline. His first competitive matches in charge are slated for next month, where the U.S. will face off in a two-leg quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Nations League.

Meanwhile, Javier Aguirre notched his second victory since taking over for Jaime Lozano as Mexico’s head coach in August. The atmosphere at Akron Stadium was charged, with fans engaging in a homophobic chant, which had previously led to sanctions from FIFA; however, the officiating team, led by Costa Rican referee Keylor Herrera, opted not to interrupt the game.
